In all honesty, we don't eat here. We have been here a handful of times since we moved to the south side almost seven years ago, but we probably haven't been there in at least four years. The shakes really are "famous," though, at least in this neighborhood.
That said, I really got sucked into this drawing. I did the initial drawing while sitting in the parking lot across the street, and added the color at home. And at Starbucks. And at work while my students were working on a still life last night. And then at home again. I really got sucked in. In the spirit of full disclosure though, I must add that this sign is supposed to say "red hots," not "red hot." There was a stoplight blocking the "s" while I was drawing, and I didn't realize it was there until I pulled away.
Now that this sign is done, I have a few new spots I've scouted to sit and draw signs from. I have a feeling this could turn into a slight addiction...

Looking forward to seeing more - we just don't get signs like that in the UK! They tend to be slightly more apologetic, mostly. Like "well, you might want to pop in here. But you might not, I know you're busy. Sorry to bother you... sorry.."
I like the idea of doing signs. There are a lot that are very artistic and some that are just plain strange, but still fun to look at. Your artwork is fantastic and fun.
Love the sign- you captured the 'feel' of the place with it- I never thought of drawing a sign...
Great drawing! I'm from Chicago and you're making me miss it more :)
I'm from Chicago too! The south side, even! You have to draw Fat Johnny's hot dogs - the best in the city (about 73rd and Western). I miss that city...
fabuloso!
I like it! Well done!
Nicely done! Looking forward to more!
I'm from Chicago too. But the North side. I do miss Chicago hot dogs. It's a cool sign. I can see how drawing those might become an addiction. I look forward to seeing more.
That is SERIOUSLY cool!
Thanks everyone! This was a fun one to draw. I especially like hearing from all the people who are familiar with this sign-how cool!
I got to visit Chicago four times. Twice for weekly stays. 9-11 destroyed so much! I was a jump seater.
I fell in love with the deep dish Pizza and the "Hot Dogs" and the big Bubble Gum machine.
I was in the Hotel on Michigan Ave. Oh, my the scenes of Chicago I did on the 'Stone'. I am going to have to find somewhere somehow to do some printing.
Guess it will have to be Plexiglas.
I love this piece. It is so much a part of Our Lives.
Well, done! Where is the Starbucks Sign.
Glad you got sucked in to the sign.
